Have you ever felt like you needed a decoder ring just to understand a business proposal or a new internal process? In a world demanding us to navigate ambiguous information and ever-evolving systems, complexity often feels like the new normal. Organizational structures become matrices, processes become intricate webs, and even consumer products (think smart TVs with endless apps) offer a bewildering array of choices.

As complexity rises, a strange thing happens: we can become numb to it, even trained to question or distrust simple ideas. When a convoluted solution is proposed, many accept it, perhaps fearing they’ll look uninformed if they don’t grasp its intricacies. Conversely, when a straightforward idea emerges, our instinct can be to probe and complicate it until it feels sufficiently “robust.” But are there truly no great, simple answers anymore?

The Enduring Power of Simplicity; Even When It’s Hard to Achieve

I contend, along with thinkers like Matthew E. May, that true power and competitive advantage often still lie in simplicity. The challenge is that achieving elegant simplicity in a world that defaults to complexity is harder than ever. Consider the evidence:

  • IT Project Success Rates: Historically, a significant portion of IT projects struggle to deliver full satisfaction, with project size often correlating with failure risk. Complexity is a major culprit.
  • Market-Defining Products: The original iPhone, launched in 2007, lacked many “key features” of its competitors (like cut-and-paste initially). Its genius lay in radically simplifying the user experience, which redefined the smartphone market.
  • Disruptive Business Models: Nucor’s “mini-mill” concept simplified steel production, using reclaimed materials and smaller footprints to deliver commodity products at lower cost, fundamentally shifting the industry.
  • Finding Core Value: Instagram began as a feature-rich but unfocused app called Burbn. By stripping it down to a simple photo filtering and sharing experience, it achieved explosive growth.

Simplicity is still a potent force. The difficulty lies in cutting through the noise to achieve it.

Your Toolkit for Cultivating Simplicity

As a fractional CIO, I help clients apply these lenses to their IT and business challenges.

  1. What EXACTLY Are We Trying to Solve?
    • Get crystal clear upfront on the specific problem. Without this focus, you risk “boiling the ocean” with overly broad or misdirected solutions.
  2. What Does Our Customer, Employee, and Organization TRULY Value in This Context?
    • Understanding the core value you’re trying to create or protect prevents over-engineering and ensures your solution addresses a real need.
  3. Can We Describe Our Approach in ONE Simple Sentence?
    • The “elevator pitch” test. If an idea or solution requires a lengthy explanation to be understood, it’s likely too complex. Simplicity breeds clarity and buy-in.
  4. Would This Make Sense to an Intelligent Nine-Year-Old?
    • Children often see patterns and grasp core concepts with a clarity unburdened by adult “filters” and jargon. If you can’t explain the essence simply, review.
  5. Have We Simplified to the Point of Losing Essential Value?
    • This is the crucial counterbalance. As Einstein purportedly said, “Everything should be made as simple as possible, but no simpler.” Ensure your quest for simplicity doesn’t strip away the core functionality or value required to solve the problem effectively.

Championing Simplicity in a Complex World

Once you’ve distilled your problem, solution, and approach to its core simplicity, be prepared to champion it. In a world accustomed to complexity, simple solutions can face skepticism. As your fractional CIO, part of my role is to advocate for appropriately simple, elegant, and effective technology solutions that deliver clear business value without unnecessary frills or operational burdens. Stick with your clear message, explain its power, resist the creep of complexity, and you’ll set a new standard for focused action.
