- It sounds obvious, but it’s amazing how often presenters get caught up in their story or their data and forget to consider who they’re speaking to. What’s important to them? What’s their level of existing knowledge? What are their professional (and even personal) contexts? What metaphors or analogies will resonate? Ground your preparation in understanding your audience to ensure your message lands effectively. Their time is precious; don’t waste it.
- Identify Your ONE Key Message:
- Notice the singular: “message.” Your presentation must have one clear, central point: the “why you’re there.” Articulate this in a single sentence. Anything more dilutes focus. A senior executive audience usually wants the key message and “the ask” upfront. For others, a bit more build-up might be effective. Providing a clear structure, like a map for a tour, helps your audience follow along. And remember: keep it simple. - Practice, Practice, Practice (The Content Flow):

- Think you were done? Rehearse again, this time focusing on your delivery. The more intimately you know your content, the more comfortable you’ll be making eye contact and genuinely connecting with your audience, rather than reading notes. This connection dramatically amplifies your message’s impact.

- When it’s time to present, nerves are normal, even for seasoned speakers. The key is to channel that energy into confident focus, not let it unsettle you. As the saying goes: “The objective is not to kill the butterflies, but to get them to fly in formation.”
